Case Study: Woods & Day Solicitors

Woods & Day Solicitors is a leading solicitor firm based in Sydney specialising in Commercial Contracts, Corporate Law, Property and Leasing, and Debt Recovery. Woods & Day Solicitors wanted to adopt a risk approach that would 'bake-in' security in its culture and operations. Given the rapid growth in cyber-attacks and the ever increasing growth in case load, Woods & Day Solicitors was determined to demonstrate its security commitment to its clients as well as bid for tenders where security is paramount.

  1. Improve security posture and maturity via a lasting risk management framework;
  2. Implement security as a culture so that it is ‘baked-in’ in its operations and can inherently scale alongside the business;
  3. Increase the enterprise market credibility and trust by accelerating the security initiatives already in play; and
  4. Toughen the security ecosystem to reduce the likelihood of a future information security breach.

Armour Networks worked with Woods & Day Solicitors and their Information Security Management System (ISMS) consultants to design an ISMS that accommodates the constant growth and change the team at Woods & Day Solicitors thrives on. Ensuring that the methodology was customized to fit the culture and specific needs of Woods & Day Solicitors and its operations was an essential step in the implementation process. “If the risk methodology does not align with how the business is run, the staff will be unable to execute, resulting in a near-certain breakdown of the ISMS in the longer term,” explains Tim Morgan from Armour Networks.

Implementing a system that every staff member will, and can use themselves, was also a key consideration. Armour Networks was already very familiar with the tools and technologies used by Woods & Day Solicitors, using many of these daily. This familiarity meant that Woods & Day Solicitors did not have to purchase any new security governance platform, and stakeholders were much more willing to adopt the ISMS.

Armour Networks and Woods & Day Solicitors conducted meetings with everyone from new starters to the Principal Solicitor to identify and formulate security risks at a level Woods & Day Solicitors could manage. They also created an actionable list of items that would work with the organization’s existing culture, processes, and technology choices.

In the few months since its certification and using a risk approach to manage security, Woods & Day Solicitors grew its security investments and resources threefold, with no plan to slow down or stop. In fact, the firm is currently working with Armour Networks to implement the Australian Cyber Security Centre’s (ACSC) Essential Eight Maturity Model.

Security uplifts are now integrated into both company-wide and team-level goals, and every staff member knows and understands why security is core to Woods & Day Solicitors’ business.

Woods & Day Solicitors implemented an Information Security Management System (ISMS) specifically designed to best meet its ways of working and its ever-changing organization; security was given organizational level priority and is owned directly at the founder level. Woods & Day Solicitors achieved certification to ISO 27001. Armour Networks acted on behalf of Woods & Day Solicitors through the certification process, and Woods & Day Solicitors won a Government tender.

Armour Networks are now implementing the Australian Cyber Security Centre’s (ACSC) Essential Eight Maturity model – a Government framework that ensures a hardened baseline, making it much harder for adversaries to compromise systems.
